The History of Poker Chips

[ English | Deutsch | Español | Français | Italiano ]

Poker chips have been manufactured from a huge range of materials in an almost infinite assortment of variations since the creation of wagering and the need to keep track of winnings. The most familiar components used at this time in the creation of current poker chips are plastic, clay composite, and acrylic composite. Clay chips, the oldest of the group, have been made in America since the late 19th century.

Back in the 19th century, poker enthusiasts appear to be using any tiny valuable object you can imagine. Early poker enthusiasts occasionally used jagged gold pieces along with chips – primarily manufactured of wood and clay. By the 1900s, poker chip designs started to employ a greater prominence, and the smooth sides of older chips were given up to chips with ridges to hold them neatly stacked together.

There is little debate that poker has grown steadily in appeal ever since its beginnings in the 19th century. With the huge growth of web gaming and unique TV shows, community appeal in poker has accelerated more rapidly than ever before. Many individuals are initially introduced to poker by TV showslike "Celebrity Poker" or the Travel Channel’s "World Poker Tour," and many will play their 1st hands on the internet. Regardless of online poker’s growth, nothing competes with the feeling of shuffling heavy poker chips in your hands, throwing chips into the middle of a poker table, or stacking high pilesstacks of chips after displaying a winning hand.
