Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he enjoyed betting on various card games when he was young. He found himself becoming very competitive in these card games while playing his dad. He brought about an attempt to get more rest and focus even more on poker.

The definite advancement in his game happened when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would regularly wager against each other. He was able to access some of the best players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would sharpen his cunning thinking skills. He applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL Texas Holdem.

He also helped his sibling Annie Duke master poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the strongest female players the poker world has ever seen. He headed to Sin City in 1993 and competed in cash games for the following decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
